What is the Definition of Stress Management?
To understand the what the management of stress is, it's important to also understand what stress itself is.
The definition of stress is an emotional and physical response to threats - real or imagined.
To manage stress effectively the goal would be to target the response to the threat as well as work on our perceptions of the threats themselves.
To manage the response to stress, a counter-active "relaxation response" needs to be initiated when we become stressed. Regardless of why we become stressed, when it happens, our bodies go into a heightened state which can be helpful for short periods of time. However, we weren't meant to sustain this "heightened state" for too long. Therefore, we need to trigger a relaxation response to manage the signs and symptoms we feel when we're stressed.
There are an unlimited number of ways to manage stress through exercise, and relaxation therapy for example. The key is to find as many different tools as possible that work for you in relieving your stress... and you also have to make use of those tools when you need them.
Once you understand what stress is, understanding the definition of Stress Management becomes a lot clearer.
It involves pro-actively seeking out and participating in the activities that relieve your stress in addition to finding ways to live a healthy lifestyle so that you can begin to prevent stress as well.
