Stress and Hair Loss

Stress and Hair Loss: Can stress make me lose my hair?

It's not uncommon for periods of high stress to cause hair loss. During a traumatic life event or other long periods of stress, growing hair can sometimes go into dormancy. And within a few months, this hair may begin to fall out while shampooing or brushing.

Hair loss due to severe or chronic stress can be reversed, however it takes some time. Once the strain has been relieved, the hair will begin to grow again, but it can take months or even a year.

Unfortunately, some of the situations that cause this type of strain (such as divorce and loss of a loved one) can be difficult to manage even without the additional stress caused by hair loss.

Another common condition related to stress and hair loss is called "alopecia areata". This is when intense stress causes your white blood cells to attack the hair follicles causing the hair to stop growing. This type of hair loss usually happens in round patches. They may start off small but can eventually effect the entire head.

Because hair loss can be caused by many other things, if you are experiencing any type of hair loss, be sure to talk with your physician as well as your hair stylist who can give you tips to care for your fragile hair.

In addition, it's important to learn how to manage your stress.

Participating in stress management activities can help you not only manage but also prevent your stress which is crucial when you begin to experience severe side effects such as hair loss.

It's also important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet so that your body and your hair has all the nutrients it needs to get you through difficult times.

Check out these stress management strategies to get you started on the right path.
