What are Yoga Sticky Mats?
Yoga mats are used during the exercise to perform the different poses (asanas) on. They provide support and comfort as well as stability.
As in the photo below, many asanas require a great deal of balance, stability, and control. Imagine doing that pose on a slippery yoga mat... this could be dangerous and cause injury. And you know what they say, "necessity is the mother of invention". So I imagine that many people fell or injured themselves during yoga before "sticky" mats were created. But that's just my theory.
Sticky mats are useful for nearly any yoga practice, but they are especially necessary for Ashtanga yoga poses because of the profuse sweating it causes.
One of the most common materials used in yoga mats is PVC. This material has a high "stickiness" factor and is also commonly used in sticky mats. If you purchase this type of mat, it's important to keep it clean for it to maintain it's sticky surface.
Other sticky mats are textured and the type of mat you purchase is all about preference.
An excellent choice is the Premium Sticky Yoga Mat from Gaiam . These mats are much thicker than regular yoga mats - which I personally like for the comfort factor since I have a bad back. These mats are affordable and an excellent choice for any yoga practice.
Please Note: While yoga is a great exercise and can bring improvements to your health and well being, it isn't right for everyone. Doing the exercises incorrectly can cause injury and you should never push yourself if it doesn't feel right. As always, be sure to get your Doctor's approval before beginning this or any exercise program.
