How to Make Resolutions You'll Keep

It’s that time of year again… when we all begin to think about what we would like to accomplish during the next year. We think about our goals, our dreams, and our personal vices that we’d like to change.

According to some reports, 40 – 45% of Americans make resolutions each year.

While the success of the resolutions are often reportedly low, people who make and set resolutions are 10 times more likely to reach their goals than those who don’t. So to help you reach yours, here are some tips to writing resolutions you’ll keep:

Be realistic… and honest with yourself.

Don’t set a goal to lose 50 pounds this year if you know that it’s not a realistic goal. Otherwise, you’ll be setting yourself up for failure and stress.

Think outside the box.

The standard resolutions of losing weight, quitting smoking, etc. are great goals to have however, there are many other options for you to consider. In fact, your options are limited only by your imagination.

Think about some personal goals you may want to work towards. Are there any new skills you would like to learn this year? Or hobbies you’re interested in taking up? Picking a resolution that will include some fun will not only help you reach your goals, but will also help you to relieve some stress along the way. And once you have found your path to success with a fun goal, take a similar approach to getting success with a more difficult goal.

Check your progress.

One of the many reasons that people fail to follow through on their Resolutions is that they simply forget about them or they allow themselves to give up when they get off track. To avoid this, get out your calendar and assign some regular check-ins with yourself. How often you check your progress will depend on your goal and your own personal preferences. This will help to remind you of your goal and to stay on track (or get back on track when you’ve lost your way).

If you need more help, the Stressful Lives Stress Management Workbook is a great tool to help you in setting and reaching goals. This Workbook includes detailed information for setting goals and also includes a Goal Tracker to help you keep track of your progress along the way.
