Beginners Yoga: Tips and Information

When first learning about yoga, how it works, and how to participate, it can seem confusing. But by understanding the basics, you can begin to work towards building your confidence with the ultimate stress relieving exercise.

Understanding Yoga: The Basics

Yoga was created around the idea that to experience optimal health, you need to focus on bringing the mind, body, and spirit together as one.

It is done by forming a series of postures called "Asanas". Through a series of asanas and meditation, Yoga will help you to stretch, become flexible, strengthen your mind and body... as well as find inner peace and calm. Yoga is often used as a strength and flexibility exercise as well as a tool for stress management. In many places around the world, yoga and meditation are also used for spiritual enlightenment. However, it is not directly a part of any religion in a way that would conflict with any religious beliefs you may or may not have.

There is a lot more to Yoga and frankly this section could go on forever, however, understanding the short version that I've given you here is enough to help you understand the exercise you seek to learn.

Beginners Yoga: Getting Started

As some of the yoga asanas can be complicated, it's extremely important that you choose a beginners class or a beginners instructional DVD like the one included in this Yoga for Beginner's Kit.

There are many different types and styles of yoga and the one(s) you choose to practice will be based on personal choice. Some of the factors that should influence that decision are:

  • How intense do you want the workout to be?
  • Do you have any limiting health issues that should be taken into consideration?
  • Do you have any physical areas you would like to target, such as a bad back?
  • Do you want to practice in a classroom setting or in your own home?

Once you have an understanding of what your needs are and what you would like to achieve with yoga, you can begin looking for the right exercise for you.

To begin, you'll also need to consider what type of equipment or tools you will need. Be sure that you wear comfortable and flexible clothing during your workout, and don't worry about shoes... they're not needed. Your yoga exercise should be done barefoot or with no-slip socks.
